Name: Allison Nelson
Position: Part-time Sales Advisor
How would you describe your personal style?: I’d say my personal style is a little mix of everything. I like trends- I like to keep up with them but I mix in vintage pieces so that I don’t look like every generic person walking down the high street.
Who is your style icon?: I don’t really know if I have an actual style icon. I can’t really think of anyone specific but I would say that I love the fashion house Balmain. I really like everything embellished so I absolutely love the Balmain style, and every collection that they do. I studied Fashion Design and embellishment is kind of a signature of my own pieces. My own designs tend to be loose fitting; I like simple silhouettes but with a lot of embellishment to make them unique.
What are your favourite pieces this season?: My favourite area of the store is the designer area. I’m in love with this coat by a brand called Conspicuous. It has a really simple silhouette that I love, but with great details like the gold zip and the pockets, and it’s a really great shape too- I love the cut. I actually tried it on with this outfit I’m wearing and I think it looks really good with jeans. For the full effect I think you have to wear it zipped up, because then you can see how good the gold zip looks against this lovely dark blue. But if I was wearing it open, I’d just wear it with something quite plain underneath – I like simple things, but done really well! I’d style it with a really nice fur collar and heels- big, chunky heels would look great with this.
Any bestsellers so far this season?: Conspicuous also have some really great bomber jackets that are proving pretty popular. When it comes to bestsellers, we’ve just got a new denim brand in called Dr Denim and they’ve been hugely in demand. We stock BDG and Cheap Monday, and they’re really great brands too, but customers just keep asking about Dr Denim.
Other pieces that are hugely popular are all the tartan pieces by a brand called Cooperative. They’re doing everything in tartan – trousers, skirts, shirts, coats, because as you know, tartan’s a huge trend this season. They also do a really cute pinafore that’s selling really well.
Finally, what’s your favourite thing about working in retail?: I like the customer service aspect. It’s not just clearing rails and tidying up, there’s always someone to talk to and help out. And obviously I love working with fashion. I’m always looking at labels of our stock to see who the designer is, how it’s been made and what the materials are. The vibe and atmosphere in Urban Outfitters is great too. It’s a chilled and relaxed environment, everyone’s really nice and we always have really great, cool music playing in store– you know the kind of stuff you wouldn’t hear on the radio all the time. I really like that aspect of it. It’s almost like working for a lifestyle brand in here, rather than just your average high street shop.
