A slightly different spin for today’s Sales Assistant Session, as we hot foot it to old favourite Urban Outfitters to get the lowdown on the hottest new season trends for both guys AND gals. Such a double whammy surely calls for twice the expert knowledge, so allow us to introduce you to not one but two superstar Sales Assistants…
Name(s): Jena Churchill, Jamie Buchan
Position(s): Sales Assistants
So guys- what’s going down at Urban Outfitters this season?: There are so many different things going on right now! With Summer on the horizon (kinda…) we’ve got a real push on festival style clothing, along with a really strong Boho look, loads of oversized styles and the long awaited bikinis! Cinco de Mayo (a Mexican holiday associated with freedom) has been another focus of ours which has inspired some really cool pieces.
Streetwear is huge this season at Urban- with a 90’s twist. Graphic tees have a huge presence in store and brands such as Obey and Strussy have taken this as a major source of inspiration. There is a big divide within this trend though; customers can either opt for the Nirvana-esque grungy styling or cutesy Clueless look.
Monochrome is another huge trend this season which is being pushed with our Visual Merchandising- you’ll notice all of our windows and store art currently reference this trend.
Which brands are doing which trends best?: Good question! Cooperative, our biggest selling brand, is really kicking it with the prim and proper Clueless style approach to 90’s style.
Sparkle and Fade are focussing on sports luxe and keeping it simple with blacks, whites and nudes and a bit of lace to give the look an edge.
Pins and Needles‘ leading trend for this season is Virgin Suicide; think 90’s grunge with an Asian Twist. Lots of floral dresses and oversized knits best teamed with big chunky heels.
The return of Fred Perry and their take on classic sportswear has proved a popular choice for the fellas, with classic polos flying off the shelves.
Finally, as a general styling point we’ve seen a wash of pastel coloured clothes hit menswear which are perfect to jazz up your wardrobe for Spring.
Which trends do you guys think will really take off?: (Jamie) I have a feeling studs are gonna be back, I just hope we don’t go too crazy with them… (Jena) For me, I’d love to see a modern twist on our classic 90’s revival; I love it but worry it’s too copycat and not original enough. Best styled with a modern piece in my opinion!
Lastly, what are you guys listening to in store?: London Grammar. They’re the perfect soulful indie sound to work to.
