Every Summer, fashion appreciating men folk the length and breadth of the country are faced with a dilemma- follow in the footsteps of the trend dictating fashion houses parading the hottest new season wares, running the risk of looking too “en Vogue”, or stick to what you know. Certain tried and tested fail safes are guaranteed to leave you looking good, whatever the occasion. Fellas, if you’re uncertain as to how to earn your first fledgling fashion stripes, may we suggest forming the basis of your Summer wardrobe around these key pieces. Super slick Summer vibes comin’ atcha…
A lightweight knit, whether worn solo or layered over a shirt, must surely be one of the most important pieces for pulling together a slick Summer look. Get most wear out of navy or grey, but we’re championing green, red and cream for this season, too.
A transeasonal classic, this wardrobe multi-tasker is as perfect with jeans as it is shorts and will see you through every Summer event imaginable. Be it a BBQ with friends, frisbee on the beach or maxin’ at the park, throw on a baseball tee and you’re good to go- just avoid the prints. You have been warned…
Wardrobe distinctly lacking in Summer stripes? Lads, do have a word. These easy breezy pieces are as simple to wear as a baseball tee but add an extra dash of panache- great with shorts and sliders or team with a Summer blazer for Talented Mr Ripley vibes.
Lighter than jeans without the commitment of shorts, Summer chinos are the ideal middle ground when grappling with the ever unpredictable British weather. Stick with muted pastels and the colour possibilities are endless- navy, stone and grey are classic; yellow, peach and green undeniably tricker to work with, but deserving of extra style points.
Lads, listen up- combat shorts are NOT YOUR ONLY OPTION. Denim is a great alternative when lacking in excessive pocket-age, rolled up and slim fit. City shorts are super slick for those brave enough- just avoid anything printed. Searching desperately for some middle ground? May we introduce you to the shape of the season, tailored chino shorts. Ooft.
As the mercury rises, a plea- ditch the socks. Roll those hems up or throw on a pair of shorts with this iconic footwear look and you’re set for whatever Summer throws at ya. Minus the standard socks. (But if you absolutely must, keep them colourful. It really is the least you can do.)
The perennial wardrobe favourite still has a place in every gent’s Summer wardrobe, be it light or heavyweight. The former is as good with most looks as ever, the latter great for layering over a classic white tee in place of a jacket on warm Summer days.
Now, we’re not saying you have to opt for linen (although we are partial to such a look on occasion). That said, as the Summer months roll in it’s nice to lighten up a little. Opt for muted pastels if you’re feeling fancy, or stick with classic tones in a lighter fabric composition. Summer sweat marks are a definite no-no.
