Skeletons, zombies and vampires are all well and good come October 31st, but sometimes we crave a slightly more pop culture referential costume choice. Y’know, the kind that shows you’re totally on it and should be looked to as the foremost champion of what’s totally hot right now. With such glory in mind, cast an eye over our top thirteen Halloween outfits ideas for proving you’re totally 2014…

(More of a fright fest fan? OK, OK… shop killer guys and gals looks with Mallzee now.)

Take one flowing brunette mane, one red flamenco dress and two red stilettos and bingo- you have yourself one of 2014s most recognised ladies. We wish you the best of luck holding the iconic pose all night…

2- Moschino Barbie girl

Trust Jeremy Scott to take one of the world’s most famed fashion houses and make a killer Halloween costume out of it. A/W14 may have been all about the McDonalds/ Moschino mash-up, but for S/S15 things got a little more lady like in the form of a heavily Barbie inspired collection. Recreate the look with tumbling blonde locks, matching two pieces and an overload of pink.

3- Cassetteboy

Major views went Cassetteboy’s way following his remix of David Cameron’s party conference speeches, and the fame continued when he donned a dashing oversized cassette tape for his interview with the BBC. This is the one to work for optimum novelty + culture vulture points.

4- Elsa from Frozen

This one speaks for itself- BE PREPARED FOR SAME OUTFIT COMPETITION.

5- Myrtle Snow from American Horror Story

2014′s answer to Edna Mode. Crimp a bright red wig, get yourself some outrageous cat’s eye glasses and throw on as many layers as humanly possibly. Rattle on about Balenciaga and the death of couture in an eccentric yet endearing manner.

6- Maleficent

OK, admittedly not the easiest DIY but oh so worth it. The coloured contacts, chiselled cheekbones and traffic stopping lips all make for a show stopping look.

7- Piper from Orange is the New Black

STILL an awesome choice a year after it’s release, and the perfect combination of simple + effective. Strip off that make-up and source some basic orange scrubs- done.

8- Any one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

We’ve always been firmly in the Michelangelo camp, but with the 2014 release of the latest feature length film any turtle goes. Likely the ultimate DIY look of the year, it’s papier mache at the ready for this one…

9- Joffrey from Game of Thrones

Fellas, if you’re looking to go all out this is the way to do it. Think regal robes, a crown, goblet and permanent almost-choking-to-death action.

10- Gone Girl

Wanna mimic the film event of the year? No probs. Just make a “MISSING” cardboard cut out with a hole for your face and carry it around all night. Preferably with a menacingly smiling hottie by your side.

11- FKA Twigs

Break out the hair gel and bling, we’re going as the hottest breakthrough artist of the year! Again, a Robert Pattinson-alike on our arm would help…

12- Clueless Cher

Brought back in the fetchest way thanks to Iggy Azalea, a take on this iconic look is the best Halloween look by way of the 90s to now- and can be worn waaayy after the main event.

13- H&M x Alexander Wang girl

Yes, it doesn’t drop until November and Rihanna is one of the only girls in the world to be gifted a pre-release look. But don’t let that stop you! It’s a wonder what some second hand boxing gloves, a battered old puffa and chunky buckle belt can do…
