Hey Mark! G69 are pretty new on the fashion scene; we’d love to know why you decided to start the brand?
I studied at Cardonald college for my HND in Fashion Design and Manufacture. Some of the fashion world’s most respected Scottish designers came from here, such as Christopher Kane, Jonathan Saunders and Rebecca Torres. They- among others- have served as great inspiration to me. While designing my final year menswear collection, I got a great buzz from the whole process, initially creating the designs followed by the finished garments being shown on the runway at Kelvingrove art gallery.
I am also a very proud Glaswegian. When creating the brand I wanted this to be apparent, hence the reason for the G69 name which is derived from the area of Glasgow in which the label was born, the East End.
How is G69 different to it’s competitors?
I feel we offer an innovative and individual style which is totally unique.
Which designers do you draw inspiration from?
I have always admired Paul Smith for both his design talent and personality. I am a great admirer of Alexander Wang, also. Both of these labels offer a simplicity to their designs which is an aspect I try to replicate in G69 pieces.
What do you think of the Scottish fashion industry? Any distinct strengths or weaknesses?
I feel there is a huge amount of talent in Scotland in terms of designers, both established and up and coming. What I feel is a great shame is the amount of talent which was overlooked due to production being lost to overseas manufacturers. This is why I work alongside local tailors and seamstresses to produce our clothing.
What does the future hold for G69?
We hope to raise brand awareness further, whilst I will also be looking to create relationships with retailers who can offer the brand to their customers.
Can you describe G69 in three words?
Innovative, ambitious, proud.
