Sometimes, a style narrative comes along which we are more than happy to admire from afar. And so it was with culottes. Ever since we saw them paraded down the runways of Alexander Wang and Proenza Schouler we knew they were going to be big. Yet, something held us back. Perhaps it was the potentially unflattering style features- the wide legged 7/8th length, the pleated front. Perhaps it was the need to wear such a style with heels almost unquestionably. Perhaps, just perhaps, it was the fact that it was simply too darn cold outside to bear our naked ankles to the elements. Whatever the case, this was one look we were more than happy to let pass us by. As expected, the high street was not so timorous. Hot on the designer’s heels, stores soon began to push out similar variations to those that had been floating around our peripherals for months. Suddenly, we felt as if we couldn’t step into our favourite shops without being bombarded with the look. Worn with an oversized knit, culottes were cool and effortless. A loose shirt and blazer added sleek, professional connotations. Worn with a silky cami they were, surprisingly, sexy. Slowly, we began to realise something unexpected. We wanted culottes. Gulp.
But which to opt for? As the trend grew, the options became more and more great. Monochrome? Printed? Pleated or flat fronted? Knee or ankle length? So many questions, so many culottes…
Colour wise, we strongly advise keeping it classic. The shape is enough of an eye catcher without needing any garish colours to pep up the look. Black, white and navy are your friends when culotte hunting. Luckily, the high street is in full agreement. Forever 21 ace the slick black look with their minimalistic pair, ASOS throw pleats into the mix for good measure and Urban Outfitters keep it classic with go-with-anything navy.
Prefer to lighten it up? Warehouse’s soft pleat culottes are perfect for a lazy Summer’s day. Style with a classic Breton to add a splash of Gallic class to your daytime look. If you’re brave enough to opt for pattern, there are some beautiful pieces to choose from. Head to Young British designers for a fantastic take on houndstooth print culottes or, for the more feminine of you, Boohoo has some beautiful florals in easy to wear colours.
However you choose to style your culottes, rest assured you’ll be buying into a top trend. Following their many appearances on the S/S runways they continue to show face in the new season collections and are slowly gathering momentum as a street style favourite.
