It started with the Dries Van Noten S/S 2013 show. The freshest, chicest combination of glam grunge our overtired eyes had ever seen. Checks, tartans and oversized silhouettes combined with floaty florals, chequer board shoes and pencil skirts to create an insanely seductive boy/girl mash-up. May sound commonplace, but this collection was anything but. It was light, modern and original. Slowly, our love affair with the humble check began all over again. Mobama kept the flame burning with her iconic red and white checked dress during the President’s 2012 re-election. The high street didn’t miss a trick, and the past few seasons have seen a renewed push on all things square. Celebs went crazy for the trend, falling over themselves to get their hands on a piece of the sixties inspired, check infested Louis Vuitton S/S 2013 collection. As the trend worked it’s way down the ranks, we thought it was, as most trends do, dying out. We thought it really WAS square to wear checks. Then- boom! Along comes blinking Jessica Alba and proves us all wrong. Looking beautifully understated and effortlessly pretty, she breathed new life into the iconic Mobama dress and had us scrambling to drag our once-beloved checks out from the back of the wardrobe. Looking to jump back on the check-asaurus bandwagon? Do read on…
